Good has purchased this week a popular web based executable and url scanner Virustotal. VirusTotal’s service is pretty simple: Just visit the Website and eitherselect a file to scan or paste in a URL. Also available are a Windowsdesktop application and browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
In a blog post, VirusTotal says it will operate independently from Google and will keep its partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. The company says Google can help improve the service and “ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them.”
“Our goal is simple: to help keep you safe on the web,” VirusTotal said in the post today. “And we’ve worked hard to ensure that the services we offer continually improve. But as a small, resource-constrained company, that can sometimes be challenging. So we’re delighted that Google, a long-time partner, has acquired VirusTotal.”
VirusTotal aforementioned it will carry on to function independently, “maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts.”
VirusTotal is stationed in Malaga, Spain.
Conditions of the deal weren’t revealed.
