Last week, hackers have not let up in an effort to take down several American banks.
The attacks seem to be the second phase of a campaign that began in September, when a hacker group calling itself Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters took credit for a series of assaults on several large banks including, Bank of America, Citigroup, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo and PNC that caused intermittent delays.
The group said it had attacked the banks in retaliation for an anti-Islam video that mocked the Prophet Muhammad and sworn to carry on its crusade until the video was removed from the Internet.
In a post on Tuesday, the group mentioned that it had resumed Operation Ababil and that, across the last several weeks, it had focused on 9 banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Regions Financial, U.S. Bancorp, PNC, BB&T, Suntrust and Wells Fargo.
It has come to light that the attacks where launched from a infected data center, security investigators still don’t know how the data centers used in the first wave of attacks were tainted in the first place, how widespread the infection rate was and whether the servers could be utilized to attack other sites in the future.
