Chinese hackers breach US telecom networks, targeting political figures and stealing communication metadata in a sophisticated espionage campaign that raises national security concerns.

United States federal officials have uncovered a sophisticated hacking campaign targeting at least eight major telecommunications providers. The breach, attributed to Chinese state-backed actors, has raised significant national security concerns and prompted urgent government intervention.

Telecommunications Network Infiltration

According to Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser, the situation remains critically vulnerable. “We do not believe any providers have fully removed the Chinese actors from their networks,” Neuberger warned, highlighting the persistent risk of ongoing communication compromises.

The investigation began in late spring or early summer and has exposed a wide-ranging espionage effort with potentially far-reaching implications. Major telecommunications carriers, including industry giants Verizon and AT&T, have been primary targets of this sophisticated cyber intrusion.

Scope of the Data Breach

While officials stressed that classified information was not accessed, the hackers managed to extract substantial amounts of sensitive communication metadata. The stolen information includes:

Bulk phone records showing communication patterns
Indicators of who, when, and where communications occurred
Intercepted call and text data for select government and political figures

High-Profile Targets

The hacking campaign appears to have specifically targeted top political figures, including:

  • President-elect Donald Trump
  • Vice President-elect JD Vance
  • Senior members of the Biden administration

Government Response and Ongoing Investigations

Federal agencies, including the FBI and CISA, are working with telecommunications providers to eject malicious actors from their networks. However, no definitive timeline has been established for completely removing the threat.

The hackers also accessed information related to law enforcement court-ordered wiretap requests, though this was not their primary objective.

China has categorically denied involvement in the hacking campaign, despite mounting evidence presented by US intelligence officials. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions in cybersecurity and international digital espionage.

Senior US intelligence officials have provided classified briefings to senators, underscoring the gravity of the situation and its potential national security implications.
