The Chicago Yacht Club has revealed an information breach concerning credit and debit cards of the company’s high-profile members.
“Regrettably, the Club suffered a computer security incident that may involve your personal information,” Commodore Gerald Bober had published within a July 31 letter to members of the club.
The club, that has offices at Monroe and Belmont harbors, has a number of the city’s most wealthy enterprise leaders as members, such as insurance tycoon Pat Ryan, Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz, developers Elzie Higginbottom and Dan Walsh, as well as some of the Walgreen family.
According to Mr. Bober’s letter, the club’s computer systems failed on June 15, forcing an analysis into the computer system.
On June 21, a computer firm employed to research the crash discovered indicators that malware might have been placed on one of the club’s servers between April 26 and May 22, Mr. Bober’s letter states. The server provides the software hosting the club’s membership database but it’s “not the one used by members paying their account using the club’s website,” the letter explains.
The club states that because of the breach it’s restoring its server, replacing point-of-sale servers and examining its practices and security measures “to prevent unauthorized access from happening again.”
